Malta has always been populated with effect from 5200 BC A major prehistoric civilization was present on the islands before the arrival of the Phoenicians, who gave the island its name Malat, namely safe haven. Following the islands were for centuries the seat of the Order of the Knights of St. John the hospital and then part of the British Empire. Malta gained independence in 1964.
